Read any installed model
search_read with a domain filter reaches sale.order, account.move, stock.picking or anything else in the database, and the call shape is the same for every model. search_count and offset handle totals and paging.
Map the schema before answering
ir.model and ir.model.fields list what is actually installed, and fields_get returns the field types on a model, including the x_ fields added through Studio. Reading that first is what lets an answer come from your database rather than a generic Odoo.
Trace the sales pipeline
crm.lead carries stage, expected revenue and salesperson, while sale.order and sale.order.line carry the confirmed side. A question can cross from opportunity to quotation to order line.
Read invoices and payment state
account.move covers customer invoices, vendor bills and journal entries, with account.move.line for the detail. The state and payment_state fields answer what is posted, due or already settled.
Check stock without opening the warehouse app
stock.quant gives on-hand quantity per location and lot, and stock.picking with stock.move gives the deliveries and receipts behind the numbers.
It reads your Odoo data model, not a generic one.
The schema is read first, so a question that spans two of these is one question, not two lookups.

Does this work with Odoo Online as well as self-hosted?
The external API is a standard part of self-hosted and Odoo.sh deployments, and hivein connects to both the same way. On Odoo Online, Odoo documents the external API as part of the Custom plan rather than One App Free or Standard, so it is worth checking your plan before you count on it.
What about the custom fields our implementer added?
fields_get returns every field on a model, including x_ fields created in Studio and fields from custom modules. Because the connector reads the schema first, a bespoke field is treated the same as a standard one.
Does it change records in Odoo?
Reading comes first, and writes use the same create and write calls any Odoo client would. Anything that would change a record is put in front of you for confirmation before it runs.
